The essay prompt

International tourism brings more problems than benefits to local communities. Do you agree or disagree?

You have 20 minutes to write 200–300 words.

Essay type: Opinion (agree or disagree). Take one clear position in the introduction. Use two body paragraphs to support it (or one for, one acknowledging the other side), and repeat your view in the conclusion.

A 3-minute plan

  1. Introduction: paraphrase the topic and give your position in one sentence.
  2. Body paragraph 1: your strongest reason, with an example.
  3. Body paragraph 2: a second reason, or the other side and why you still hold your view.
  4. Conclusion: restate your position in new words.

Model essay (216 words)

International tourism has grown rapidly in recent decades, bringing millions of visitors to cities, beaches and natural attractions. Although tourism can create serious problems, I disagree that its disadvantages outweigh its benefits for most local communities.

The economic benefits of tourism are significant. Visitors spend money on accommodation, food, transport and souvenirs, which creates jobs for local people and supports small businesses. In regional Australia, for example, many towns depend on tourists who come to see the Great Barrier Reef or the outback. Tourism income can also fund the protection of natural and cultural sites.

Nevertheless, tourism can cause real harm when it is poorly managed. Popular destinations may suffer from overcrowding, rising housing costs and pressure on water and waste services. In some cities, short-term rentals have reduced the number of homes available to residents, and fragile environments can be damaged by large numbers of visitors.

However, these problems can largely be solved through careful planning. Governments can limit visitor numbers at sensitive sites, regulate short-term rentals and use tourist taxes to improve local infrastructure. Involving local communities in decisions also ensures that tourism reflects their needs.

In conclusion, while international tourism can create difficulties, its economic and cultural benefits are greater, provided that it is managed responsibly and local communities share in the rewards.
