Before you start

Do

  • Use a headset with a microphone, in a quiet room.
  • Keep the microphone near your chin, not in front of your mouth.
  • Start speaking as soon as recording starts, and keep going after small mistakes.
  • Take notes while you listen, as you can on test day.
  • Check word counts and use one spelling style (Australian or American).

Don't

  • Don't pause for 3 seconds. The real test closes the microphone.
  • Don't go back to fix a word when speaking. It costs fluency.
  • Don't guess wildly where wrong answers lose points (multiple answers, Highlight Incorrect Words).
  • Don't replay the audio. In the real test you hear it once.
  • Don't use a memorised template that ignores the question.

How the buttons work

  1. ▶ Start test starts the clock (45 minutes) and shows the first question. Questions come one at a time, as in the real test.
  2. Answer, then press Next ▶. Like the real test, you can't go back to an earlier question.
  3. Writing tasks show their own countdown (for example, 20 minutes for the essay) and move on when it runs out.
  4. ❚❚ Pause stops the clock if you're interrupted (the real test can't be paused). End test finishes early and shows your results.

How it's marked

  • Multiple-choice, fill-in and listening questions are marked instantly with the real test's rules. See exactly how we mark.
  • Essays and summaries get an estimated score for each of Pearson's writing traits, with spelling and grammar highlighted. How PTE writing is scored.
  • At the end you'll see a results report by task type, with what to practise next.

Unofficial practice. We wrote these questions to match the official PTE Academic task types and timings. They are not real exam questions, and points shown are practice feedback, not a PTE score. For an official estimate, use Pearson's scored practice tests.

What's in this test

Task Time in the real test Counts towards
Summarize Written Text 10 minutes Reading + writing
Write Essay 20 minutes Writing
Summarize Spoken Text 10 minutes Listening + writing
Write from Dictation ×3 about 1 minute each Listening + writing

The 45-minute timer covers all four. In the real test, the tasks are spread across Parts 1 and 3 and each has its own timer.

How it's marked

  • Write from Dictation: one point for each correct, correctly spelled word, exactly as Pearson marks it.
  • Essay and summaries: an estimated score for each of Pearson's traits (content, form, grammar, vocabulary, spelling and, for the essay, structure and range), with your spelling and grammar highlighted. See how PTE writing is scored for the full criteria.

Everything is marked in your browser. Nothing you write is sent to us or stored, unless you turn on My progress to track your scores on this device.
