Choosing a headset for PTE practice

The test centre gives you a headset on the day. At home, practising with something similar makes test day feel familiar.

Do you need one?

You can practise with your laptop's built-in microphone, and our speaking recorder works with it. But a headset with a boom microphone helps in two ways: it sounds more like the test, and it teaches you the right microphone position before test day.

What to look for

  • Boom microphone on an arm, so you can practise keeping it beside your chin.
  • Over-ear, closed headphones to block noise, similar to the test centre.
  • USB connection for simple plug-and-play with laptops. Or USB-C for newer machines.
  • Comfort for practice sessions of an hour or more.
  • Noise-cancelling microphone if you live in a busy household.

You don't need an expensive gaming headset. A good office or call-centre headset does the job.
