The short answer
| You need it for… | Usually take |
|---|---|
| University study (undergraduate or postgraduate) | Academic |
| Professional registration (for example nursing, medicine) | Academic. Check your board's rules. |
| Work, training or high school | General Training |
| Australian visas | Either is accepted by Home Affairs, with the same band scores |
Always confirm with the organisation you're applying to. Universities and registration boards set their own rules.
What's different
| Academic | General Training | |
|---|---|---|
| Reading | Three long academic texts | Everyday and workplace texts, plus one longer text |
| Writing Task 1 | Describe a chart, graph, map or process | Write a letter |
| Writing Task 2 | Essay | Essay (usually on more general topics) |
| Listening and Speaking | Same for both | Same for both |
Is one easier?
Many people find General Training reading slightly more accessible, but the band scale is adjusted so the same band means the same level of ability. Pick the version that your purpose requires, not the one you think is easier.
