Model answer: General Training Task 1 (20 minutes, at least 150 words)

You ordered a piece of furniture online, but when it was delivered it was damaged. Write a letter to the company. In your letter: give details of your order, describe the damage, and say what you would like the company to do.

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to complain about a damaged item that was delivered to my home on 12 March. The item was a three-seater fabric sofa in dark grey (order number BH-40217), which I ordered from your website on 2 March at a cost of $1,250.

When the delivery driver arrived, the box was already torn, and when I unpacked it, I found that one of the wooden legs had snapped off and there was a large tear, about 20 centimetres long, in the fabric on the back of the sofa. I have taken several photographs of the damage, which I have attached to this letter. Unfortunately, the driver had already left by the time I discovered the problem.

I would like you to arrange for the damaged sofa to be collected and replaced with a new one as soon as possible, at no extra cost. Alternatively, if a replacement is not available within two weeks, I would like a full refund.

I look forward to your prompt reply.

Yours faithfully,

Daniel Moreno

A friend from another country is coming to stay with you for a week. Write a letter to your friend. In your letter: say how you feel about the visit, suggest some things you could do together, and give advice about what to bring.

Hi Marco,

I was so excited to get your email and hear that your flights are finally booked! I can't believe it's been three years since we last saw each other in Rome. I've already cleared out the spare room, so it's all ready for you.

I've been thinking about what we could do while you're here. Since you love the outdoors, I thought we could spend a day walking the coastal track from Bondi to Coogee, which has amazing views and some great places to stop for a swim. We could also take the ferry to Manly, and if you're keen, I'd love to take you to my favourite Lebanese café, which I've been telling you about for ages!

As for what to bring, the weather in Sydney in March is usually still warm, but it can be quite wet, so pack a light rain jacket as well as your swimmers. Don't forget a hat and sunscreen, because the sun here is much stronger than you'd expect.

Can't wait to see you!

Cheers,

Sofia

You have seen an advertisement for a part-time job at a local community centre. Write a letter to the manager. In your letter: explain which job you are interested in, describe your relevant experience, and say when you are available for an interview.

Dear Ms Chen,

I am writing to apply for the position of part-time Activities Assistant, which was advertised on the Westfield Community Centre noticeboard last week.

I believe I would be well suited to this role. For the past two years, I have volunteered every Saturday at my local library, where I help run a weekly English conversation group for adults who have recently arrived in Australia. This involves planning activities, welcoming new members and making sure that everyone feels comfortable taking part. Before moving to Australia, I worked as a primary school teacher for four years, so I am also experienced in organising group activities for children. In addition, I hold a current First Aid certificate and a Working with Children Check.

I am available for an interview on any weekday afternoon after 2 pm, or on Thursday mornings. I can be contacted on 0412 555 873 or by email at a.kumar@mailbox.com.

Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely,

Anita Kumar
