What band 7 means
IELTS describes a band 7 user as a good user: someone who handles complex language well and understands detailed reasoning, with only occasional inaccuracies. In practice, it means:
| Section | What band 7 needs |
|---|---|
| Listening | About 30/40 correct |
| Academic Reading | About 30/40 correct |
| General Training Reading | About 35/40 correct |
| Writing | Band 7 across the four criteria: clear position, logical paragraphs, less common vocabulary used accurately, frequent error-free sentences |
| Speaking | Speaking at length without noticeable effort, a range of vocabulary and grammar, generally clear pronunciation |
For Australian visas, Proficient English means at least 7 in each section. See our Visa English guide for all five levels.
Listening and Reading: band 7 is about accuracy, not speed
You can miss about 10 questions and still get band 7. That means you don't need to be perfect. You need to stop losing easy marks:
- Spelling and plurals: a correct idea spelled wrong scores zero.
- The word limit: three words when the limit is two is wrong.
- False vs Not Given: most people at 6.5 lose two to four marks here. Read our True False Not Given guide.
- Timing: 20 minutes per reading passage, no exceptions.
Take a full reading test and a full listening test, check which question types you lost marks on, and practise those. More tips: IELTS Reading · IELTS Listening.
Writing: the hardest band 7 for most people
The four criteria each count for 25%:
- Task Achievement / Response: answer every part of the question, with a clear position throughout (Task 2) or a clear overview (Task 1).
- Coherence and Cohesion: one main idea per paragraph, and linking words used naturally, not in every sentence.
- Lexical Resource: some less common words and collocations (alleviate pressure, a significant proportion), used accurately. Fewer, precise words beat long, rare ones used wrongly.
- Grammatical Range and Accuracy: a mix of simple and complex sentences, with most sentences error-free.
What to do: write one Task 2 essay and one Task 1 report each week, mark them with our IELTS writing checker, and rewrite the weakest paragraph. Use the Task 1 guide and the 60 Task 2 practice questions.
Speaking: fluency first, then range
- Extend every answer: answer, reason, example. In Part 3, add another point of view.
- Don't memorise answers. Examiners recognise them and they can lower your score.
- Use a few idiomatic expressions naturally, not forced.
- Self-correct calmly. Correcting a mistake is fine; long silences are not.
Practise with our IELTS speaking mock test, where a computer examiner asks the questions and you get feedback on start time and pauses. Then work through the cue cards and speaking questions.
A 6-week plan to reach band 7
| Week | Focus |

| 1 | Take one full test in each skill. Find your two weakest areas. |
| 2 | Reading and Listening question types you lost most marks on. One Task 2 essay. |
| 3 | Writing: Task 1 overviews and Task 2 planning. Two essays, marked and rewritten. |
| 4 | Speaking: one mock test, then 15 minutes of Part 2 practice a day. |
| 5 | New full tests (reading mock, listening mock). Compare with week 1. |
| 6 | Light practice, the test-day checklist, and rest before the test. |

Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to go from IELTS 6.5 to 7?
It depends on which sections are holding you back. With focused practice, many people improve Listening or Reading by half a band in 4 to 8 weeks. Writing and Speaking usually take longer, because they depend on accuracy and fluency built over time.
Why do I keep getting 6.5 in IELTS Writing?
The most common reasons are: not fully answering every part of the Task 2 question, a weak or missing Task 1 overview, frequent grammar errors, and vocabulary that is repetitive or used inaccurately. Band 7 needs 'frequent error-free sentences'.
Do I need band 7 in each section for Australian visas?
For Proficient English (10 points for skilled visas), Home Affairs requires at least 7 in each of the four sections, not just a 7 overall. Always check the current requirements on the Home Affairs website.
Is PTE easier than IELTS for getting band 7 equivalent?
Some people find PTE suits them better, others prefer IELTS. Compare the formats and score requirements in our PTE vs IELTS guide and the 'Which test should I take?' quiz.
