The 5 types of Task 2 essay
| Type | How the question ends | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Opinion (agree/disagree) | To what extent do you agree or disagree? | Take a clear position and keep it all the way through |
| Discussion | Discuss both views and give your own opinion. | One paragraph per view, then your opinion |
| Advantages and disadvantages | Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages? | Cover both, then say which is stronger |
| Problem and solution (or cause and solution) | What are the problems? How can they be solved? | One paragraph for problems/causes, one for solutions |
| Two-part question | Why is this happening? Is it positive or negative? | Answer both questions fully |
The most common way to lose marks is not answering every part of the question. Underline each part before you start.
