What is PTE Repeat Sentence?

You hear a sentence of about 3 to 9 seconds, then repeat it exactly, word for word. There's no preparation time: the microphone opens as soon as the audio ends.

How it's scored

Content (how many words you repeat in the right order), oral fluency and pronunciation. It contributes to speaking and listening.

Tips for a higher score

  • Listen for meaning, not single words. Meaning helps you remember the whole sentence.
  • Start speaking straight away, in a natural rhythm and the same intonation you heard.
  • If you miss a word, keep going. A smooth answer with one missing word beats a stop-start answer.
  • Practise chunking: hear the sentence as 2 or 3 groups of words.
  • Shadow sentences from our Listening Room to build memory and rhythm.
