Before you start

Do

  • Read the instructions for word limits, like "NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS".
  • Skim the passage first, then scan for answers.
  • Check spelling: a misspelled answer is marked wrong.
  • Leave no blanks. There's no penalty for wrong answers in IELTS.

Don't

  • Don't spend too long on one question. Move on and come back.
  • Don't write more words than the instructions allow.
  • Don't replay the audio. In the real test you hear it once.

How the buttons work

  1. ▶ Start test starts the clock (60 minutes) and shows one part at a time, as in the real test. In reading, the passage stays on screen next to the questions.
  2. Move between parts with ◀ Back and Next ▶. As in the real test, you can go back and change answers until time runs out.
  3. Listening: each recording plays once. Read the questions first, then press play and answer as you listen.
  4. ❚❚ Pause stops the clock if you're interrupted (the real test can't be paused). End test finishes early and shows your results.

How it's marked

  • Multiple-choice, fill-in and listening questions are marked instantly with the real test's rules. See exactly how we mark.
  • At the end you'll see a results report by task type, with what to practise next.

Unofficial practice. We wrote these questions to match the official IELTS question types and timings. They are not real exam questions, and points shown are practice feedback, not a band score. For official sample tests, visit ielts.org.

How to approach the IELTS Academic Reading test

  • 20 minutes per passage. Move on if you're stuck; every question is worth one mark.
  • Skim first (about 2 minutes) to see what each paragraph is about, then read the questions.
  • Matching headings: read the first and last sentences of each paragraph; the heading sums up the main idea, not a detail.
  • True / False / Not Given: False means the passage says the opposite. Not Given means the passage doesn't say.
  • Completion questions: copy the words exactly and stay within the word limit. Spelling counts.

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from the full reading tests?

The full tests always use the same three passages. This generator mixes passages from our whole bank, so each test number gives a different combination. Use it for regular practice once you've done the full tests.

Why is the total sometimes 39 or 41 questions instead of 40?

Our passages have 11 to 15 questions each, so a random mix can come to slightly more or less than 40. The band estimate scales your score to 40 before converting it.

Is the band score accurate?

It's an estimate based on IELTS's published average raw scores for each band. The real conversion varies slightly between test versions.
